A great source of firewood is deadfall, what I'm talking about is not whole trees but the fallen broken branches that litter the forest floor, or the slash of a clearcut, when ever I'm out and about an I see a source of fallen branches I pick them up and take them home you would be amazed how it adds up when you do it regular.
