Many people that burn wood for heat, waste alot of the tree, usally people will cut down a tree limb it, chunk up and split the trunk and leave all but the biggest limbs, I use a whole tree approach.
The whole tree method of firewood is just what it says, you use the whole tree, the trunk, the limbs and the leaves or needles.
The trunk of course is the main firewood I cut it to fit my stove and spilt it for ease of drying and easier burning.
The limbs I use also, the ones that are of a size larger than 2 inches are used for regular firewood, the smaller one are cut up and used as kindling, when dry they provide a lot of heat, the wood chips are also used and burn like wood pellets and give good heat.
The leaves and needles will fall of the branches and can be used an compost and mulch.
Thus I use it all, except the root I havent figuared out how to get them out without a lot of energy.
